You need a book box subscription in your life, like, yesterday.
Who doesn’t love a great subscription box? It’s all the rage right now, and I’m so for it. I like the idea of a monthly gift appearing in the mail just for me, especially if it’s bookish (um, because we deserve it). I’ve only tried a couple subscription boxes but I have a feeling I’m going to be switching it up quite a bit this year. I think the Book Subscription Box direction is where my heart is leading me … how about you?
Here’s a list of some of my favorite book subscription boxes I can’t wait to try. Keep an eye out for boxes that donate their proceeds to charities.
This is the only bookish box I’ve ever subscribed to, and although I only did this for a month to try it out I wish I had continued it. I think subscribing to this box showed me that bookish boxes are for me. Owlcrate is mostly dedicated to the Young Adult genre and the box I received was themed “strong women”. I received a hardback book (Dumpling by Julie Murphy) and a handful of bookish items including a PopFunko keychain (Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones), an arrow necklace and some bookish postcards with Hermione on them. Loved everything about it. Sign up for their newsletter to find out what themes they have each month!
Price: $29.99/month (3/6 month plans available)
Type: Young Adult
2. Bookworm Box
“Good deeds. Great reads.” If you’re like me and you have an obsession collecting signed books then this is the box for you! This is a bookish box I’ve been desperate to try (and it tends to sell out). Author Colleen Hoover’s brain child, Bookworm box started as signed book subscription box and ended up transpiring into an actual “Bookworm Box” bookstore in Sulphur Springs, TX. What makes this box especially amazing is that ALL proceeds get donated to charity, and nearly all items in the box each month are donated by authors. And it seems all of my favorite Romance authors participate in this box. You receive 2 signed books + book swag. Feel good about your romance reads by snagging this box and supporting the excellent cause.
Price: $39.99 (plus shipping)/month
3. Wonder Girl Book Box
This box has leaped to the top of my list to try. Although mainly for the YA genre it has a powerful mission of empowering and celebrating girls. Who doesn’t love bookish box with that kinda theme? And we all know that girls slay in YA literature. A huge humanitarian plus? Proceeds of this box go to organizations around the world that help women.
Price: $34.99/month (or 3 months prepaid for $98.00)
Type: Young Adult
4. Paper Street Books and Comics
Not even gonna lie. This might be the first subscription box I start my year with. I’m a huge fan of graphic novels and this box gets me excited. You do get a a choice of either an Adult fiction and/or graphic novel, so that’s pretty cool! You also receive 1-3 items related to the theme/book Bookish swag from their featured authors or publishers. Seriously though, where my comic book nerds at? Because THIS.
Type: Graphic Novel and/or Adult Fiction + Bookish
5. My Guilty Pleasure Book Crate
This might be one of my favorite ideas for a bookish box. Not only do they send you a book and bookish items, but usually items to pamper yourself! *squee* And another plus, they send you some sort of man-candy related item. Seems kinda like the ideal romance reader subscription box. Don’t forget to treat yo’ self. (no, but seriously: self care is important, and its better when it involves books).
6. Muse Monthly
For lovers of literature and tea. You’ll get a new novel and a full box or tin of tea on your doorstep! This box focuses mainly on contemporary adult fiction and likes to highlight debut writers. They talk a lot about showing diversity in literature and like to send books and/or about women, people of color, and those from the LGBTQA+ community. They also like supporting small, local, organic tea makers from the US and Canada. I love the idea of this box so much. Diverse literature + tea from local businesses? I’m in.
Price: $29.50/month (3/6 month plans available)
Type: Diverse Contemporary Adult Fiction + Tea
7. The Bookish Box
This box is for the stylish bookworm and looks super cute. Each box includes a shirt designed by Appraising Pages and 3-5 home, beauty, and fashion items. You can also select an option that includes a newly released YA book or they also offer a “no-shirt” option for those interested in just the goodies. They theme each box to cherish you favorite reads or to introduce you to new ones. I like the idea of also the “no book” option for a bookish subscription box because as bookish-people we know that shelf space is prime real estate, and who doesn’t love bookish items. You can’t lose.
Type: YA Book + Bookish
8. Book Riot Quarterly Literary Box
This one’s kinda nifty even though it’s a bit on the pricer side, but out of all the subscription boxes this one seems to have the most books included. Each quarter has a different theme and the box is curated by a specific author. You get the authors newest release, and the author also selects books and includes hand written annotated notes for subscribers. Plus, all the bookish stuff is so hipster-chic. (yeah, that’s a thing). This box is so cool, fun and personal.
Type: General Fiction (They also have a YA quarterly box [HERE])
9. Send Me Swooning
“Sexy, Sassy, and literary” is their slogan. They send you a romance novel released within the last 45 days, plus hand selected elegant items for the avid romance reader. This box looks super cute, and I like that this one is specifically made for romance book lovers.
Price: $29.99 plus $7.95 shipping/month (3/6 month plans available)
With, “Get Lit” as their slogan, I’m all in. For experimental writers and readers, this box intrigues me! It’s not only books you’ll get but also items for the aspiring writer! How cool. Each month they pair up with an independent author, poet, or small press publisher to showcase their most innovative and thought-provoking work. LitKit also throws in an assortment of unique literary devices, including writing accessories and supplies, journals, and thought-provoking prompts. It’s got a hipster-ish vibe to it, but I’m okay with that. I can’t wait to snag this box for the author in me.
Price: $37.99 (Free US Shipping)
Type: Experimental Writers/Readers
Have you picked the book subscription box you’re going to start with? Or how about gifting a subscription to your booklover friend? So many options so little time. Fill your year with a different subscription box each month. 😉 Have fun with it. You deserve it, remember?
